NCSC's Participation in Community Voices on Racial Profiling

NCSC participated  in an interaction program on community  voices on racial profiling . The program was organized by Ethno-Cultural Council of Calgary (ECCC) on March 23, 2010 as a celebration of the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination. In the program initial observations from the survey and focus group study on racial profiling that is being conducted by ECCC was presented by ECCC Executive Director Ms. Marichu Antonio . A deliberate discussion was held on how racial profiling be addressed in Calgary and people can be motivated toward taking action around racial profiling. Representatives from various community-based organizations took part in the discussion. The participants shared their experiences and impressions on racial discrimination

 

NCSC participated in the Alberta Legislature

Nepalese Community Society of Calgary (NCSC) attended the Alberta Legislature for the support of ethno-cultural communities to Motion 505 that MLA Teresa Woo-Paw was  proposing to the Legislature.

The one day program “An Experience in the Alberta Legislature” was organized by Ethno - Cultural Council of Calgary (ECCC) on March 22, 2010 in Edmonton.  As briefed by ECCC Executive Director Ms.  Marichu Antonio,   objectives of the   program were:

-       to learn about the Alberta Legislature, visit the site, and meet our Provincial Legislators;

-       to experience and witness the Alberta legislature in action;

-       to demonstrate support of ethno-cultural communities to Motion 505 that MLA Teresa Woo-Paw was  proposing to the legislature.

Motion 505: The purpose of Motion 505 is to strengthen the ability of Ministries of the Alberta government to better include and serve an increasingly diverse citizenry. All government organization are urged to assess their current level of cultural competence, share their best practices and incorporate evolving approaches  to cultural competency into their day -to -day planning and operation.

With the view of  supporting the motion 505 in the legislature, 21 participants from 16 different communities from Calgary participated in the program. Vice President Mr. Bharat Regmi and Advisor Mr. Bishnu Subba participated on behalf of Nepalese Community Society of Calgary (NCSC) in the program and expressed the strong support of NCSC to the motion.

At the occasion, participants had the opportunity to discuss with Premier Ed Stelmach at his office on immigrant issues.  A group photo session with Premier Ed Stelmach was also held.
